FAQ

What are lash extensions?

Lash extensions are an enhancement to your natural lashes, where a trained technician will individually isolate each natural lash, placing the synthetic lash 0.5-1mm away from the lash line.

How long do lash extensions last?

Short answer: It takes roughly 4-6 weeks for each natural lash to shed, you'll need fills at 2-3 weeks.

Long (+ better) answer: There are many factors that affect how long your lashes will last, including your individual lash cycle, skin type and aftercare. Each one of your lashes is on a different schedule, once a natural lash's life cycle is complete, the lash falls out, taking the extension with it. Everyone's full cycle is a bit different, however, generally, you should experience a turnover of all lashes every 4-6 weeks or so. When it comes to your skin type, those with oily skin often experience faster fall out as the oil can deteriorate the bond faster, especially when proper aftercare is not followed. In terms of aftercare, the cleaner your lashes are the longer they will last!

Do lash extensions damage your natural lashes?

As long as your lash extensions are applied properly they will NOT damage your natural lashes. At Couture Esthetics we pride ourselves in applying each lash individually and correctly to maintain the health of your natural lashes. Your natural lash health is our top priority.

To maintain the long-term health of your lashes we strongly recommend that you take the advice of your lash stylist regarding the maximum thickness and length that your lashes can safely hold. As long as the extensions applied are a safe length and thickness, your natural lashes will continue to grow through their normal cycle.

Although we recommend following your stylists' guidance in regards to length and thickness, sometimes clients chose to request extra long and thick lashes to be applied to their fine natural lashes. When doing so we cannot guarantee how long your lashes will last as they are too long or heavy for your natural lashes to support.

Don’t try to remove the eyelash extensions yourself – this could easily damage your natural lashes, as the adhesive bond is extremely strong.

My friend says lash extensions damaged their lashes?

When lashes are not properly isolated (1:1 natural lash/extension ratio), placed too close to the lash line, or not the recommended length + weight, they can cause damage.

This is why we highly advise you to receive lash extensions from experienced and highly credited technicians. At Couture Esthetics, we don't believe in a one size fits all service, your extensions will be customized so they are the right weight and thickness for you --- applied one by one --- so your natural lashes remain healthy as ever. â€‹

If you are still concerned we recommend using a growth formula that helps strengthen and condition your natural lashes. We stock Couture Esthetics Lash Serum, a highly effective growth serum that is salon-exclusive and compatible with lash extensions.

Does the application process hurt?

No, when applied properly your service should not cause you any pain. It may feel a little unusual the first time, however, most find that by their second appointment they are comfortable enough to take a nap! You should not experience any burning or stinging as we use high-quality low film adhesive + your eyes should stay fully shut the entire time.

People with extremely sensitive eyes or sinus problems may get some watering and slight stinging at the end, but this normally subsides within seconds. Please alert us if you are experiencing any stinging during the treatment – some individuals with very dry eyes/eyes that don’t close properly may do, and we will adjust our procedure to keep you comfortable.

Will lash extensions irritate my eyes?

No – once your eyelash extensions are applied, they should feel just like your normal lashes. The eyelash extension is bonded to each individual lash (not your eyelid) so it feels just like your normal lashes.

The only way that lashes can become uncomfortable is if you repeatedly rub your eyes or are rough with your extensions.

What are fills? Why is it important to book them regularly?

Your natural lashes are all on different growth cycles, meaning they are all growing and reaching the end of their life cycles and shedding at different paces. Initially, at your full set appointment, each mature natural lash will be lashed with an extension placed 0.5-1mm away from the lash line. As your natural lashes continue to grow after this, some extensions will end up further away from the lash line, and others will have fallen out naturally.

We recommend booking fills between 2-3 weeks apart, at this point we will remove the overgrown lashes to prevent them from weighing down your natural lashes, as well as lash any new growth that is mature enough to hold an extension.

Can I wear contact lenses with lash extensions?

Yes! However, we recommend removing your contacts prior to your appointment or bringing your case so you can remove them immediately prior.

Can I wear eye makeup with my lash extensions?

Yes, you can, as long as it is oil-free and very low in glycol/glycerin (although best to avoid altogether). These ingredients cause the adhesive's bond to loosen, causing the extension to fall.

We recommend oil liquid/pen liner as gel liner tends to stick in the roots of lashes and is tough to remove. The only way that lashes can become uncomfortable is if you repeatedly rub your eyes or are rough with your extensions.

Powder eyeshadows are fine, make sure to check the ingredients list of liquid eyeshadows though.

The only makeup we strongly recommend not wearing is mascara, as it causes the extensions to clump together (especially fans --- as the fans snap shut and don't reopen) and often weakens the adhesive bond (especially waterproof mascara).

Why is it important to clean my lashes? And how do I do it?

Clean lashes are happy lashes. The more build-up of sebum, dead skin and makeup that your eyelashes catch will deteriorate the bond between the adhesive and the lash. The cleaner your lashes are the longer they will last.

We recommend cleaning your lashes 3-4 times a week or every night if wearing makeup. To do so you will need a fluffy synthetic brush and a lash cleanser. Lash cleansers are important as they are specifically made to do the job at hand. First, you want to gently wet your lashes, then one eye at a time, pick up a toonie-sized amount of cleanser with your brush + gently brush down from base to ends, rinse and repeat on the other eye.

Here at Couture Esthetics, we carry ProLong Lash Cleanser, "The world's most loved eyelash extension cleaner." ProLong is made from natural ingredients and does not contain oil, glycerine, glycerol, artificial colour, ethanol, parabens, or synthetic fragrances. It is also pH balanced, thus being gentle around the eyes, and vegan friendly!
